Lake Winnipesaukee is known for its stunning views, crystal-clear waters, and endless recreational opportunities. But beneath its surface lies a hidden history—one that tells the stories of the boats, barges, and even cars that have found their final resting place at the bottom of New Hampshire’s largest lake.
Beneath the Water
Over the years, more than 80 shipwrecks have been discovered in Lake Winnipesaukee. These sunken relics range from steamboats and motorboats to barges and even three early-model Ford cars! While some met their fate in storms, others were deliberately scuttled or simply abandoned as time passed.
Here’s a breakdown of what lies beneath:
🚢 35 steamboats – Once the backbone of transportation on the lake, many of these vessels were retired and sunk as newer technology took over.
🛥 40 motorboats – From leisure boats to work vessels, these wrecks offer a glimpse into the boating culture of the past.
🚗 Three early-model Ford vehicles – It’s not every day you hear about cars resting at the bottom of a lake! These cars may have gone through the ice or been disposed of in ways that remain a mystery.
Divers have mapped and documented many of these wrecks, preserving their stories for future generations. The cold, freshwater environment has helped keep many of these shipwrecks intact, offering a unique window into the past.
